January 24 - Well Done Good and Faithful Servant

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” (Matthew 25:21, ESV)

This is our last devotion for the fast. Thank you for being faithful to pray and to discover God’s goodness. As you reflect on this fast and the goodness of God in the scriptures we have studied, may you always be constantly aware of His goodness in your life. May you meet every adversity with His goodness, and may others be touched by it.

Recognizing His goodness in our lives leads to gratitude to God and encouragement to others through our testimony. We all have this honor: to be a shining example of His goodness to others. There is not one undeserving of the Goodness of God. May we never forget that, and may we seize the opportunity to share it with all people. “Enter the joy of your Master!”

January 23 - How Do You See God?

“Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”” (Luke 9:54, NKJV)

Jesus rebuked them, telling them they did not know what spirit they were of. The disciples were ready to use the power of God to kill and destroy people who were rejecting Jesus. I mean, If we just kill all the bad people, the world would be good—just like us, right? I don’t think so!

Jesus made it clear they were not representing His Kingdom well by thinking this way. Killing and destroying sinners—those Jesus came to save—is not a demonstration of God’s goodness. How we see God defines how we think, how we act and how we live. They had a wrong spirit. These were the very ones that Jesus came to show His goodness to. How do you see God?

Prayer: God fill my heart with your goodness that I may see others as you see them

Pause & Reflect: Consider how your view of God shapes the way you respond to others—especially those who disagree with you or reject what you believe.

January 22 - Goodness Will Change Your Countenance

“…Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.” (Exodus 34:29, ESV)

One thing that seems to have been on the mind of Moses was the glory of God. He encountered that glory at the burning bush. He encountered that glory every time he went up the mountain to speak with God. Yet in his heart, he wanted to experience more of God’s glory. “Show me your glory!” was his request. “Behold, my goodness!” was God’s response.

Isn’t it interesting that of all the times spent in God’s glory, it was seeing God’s goodness that changed Moses’ countenance!? Maybe this is what the church needs today—a fresh revelation of God’s goodness that changes our countenance! Imagine what this would do to the world if they were to see a Church transformed by seeing God’s goodness!

Prayer: “God, once again I ask: reveal Your goodness to me and transform my countenance so that the world sees Christ in me, the hope of glory.

Pause & Reflect: Time alone with God is where this transformation happens.

January 21- When Goodness Prevails

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”” (Revelation 21:4, ESV)

Most often, tears are associated with mourning, crying and pain. They are rooted in the kingdoms of this world and are associated with theft, death and destruction—the unholy trinity of hell, the birthplace of all pain. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus comes that we might have life and have it abundantly.

It is pretty obvious that there are two kingdoms at work in the earth: one of life and one of death. It is also obvious who leads those kingdom—Satan, the one who steals, kills, and destroys; and Jesus who heals, restores and redeems. God Himself, the author of life, will wipe away every tear from our eyes. We shall forevermore behold His goodness. Tears are wiped away where goodness prevails!

Prayer: “Thank you, Jesus, that there is a day coming where there will be no more tears.”

Pause & Reflect: Press in to demonstrating the kingdom in the lives of those who are hurting, mourning and crying.

January 20 - It Matter What We Believe

“You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.” (Psalm 119:68, ESV)

The revelation of God’s goodness profoundly impacts what we believe about Him. First, God’s goodness assures us that He can be trusted because He has our best interests in mind. Second, God’s goodness is not contingent upon our actions or inaction—our goodness or lack of goodness. He is good either way, it is who He is.

Therefore as believers, we are encouraged by His goodness to live with gratitude and obedience toward Him. Third the revelation of God’s goodness give us hope even in difficult and stressful circumstances, for His goodness is actively moving in our lives. Fourth, God’s promises are directly connected to His goodness; therefore, they teach us patience as we learn to see His goodness in times of delay.

As we meditate on God’s goodness, let’s remember that He has great plans for us, and none of them include defeat.

Prayer: “Holy Spirit, you are the great teacher! Teach me the goodness of God and how understanding that impacts my life.

Pause & Reflect: Which of the four points above needs the greatest attention in your life.

January 19 - Shine, Do Good Works, Glorify God

Easy job description!

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16, ESV)

Jesus knows He has encountered people with His goodness! They have seen His good works: water turned to wine, boats filled with fish, and everyone present healed. Now, He invites them—and us—to partner with Him.

Here is your job description, Jesus say: “Shine!” Be happy. Be joyful. Smile at people! Treat them how you want to be treated. Do good works! Demonstrate kindness, give encouragement, be compassionate, and heal people!
If you do those first two—shine and do good works—people will glorify God! You will inspire them to do the same, bringing more glory to my Father! Be a living testimony of His goodness. Let Him shine and do good works through you!

Prayer: “Jesus, help me let my light burn bright and work through me to heal others.”

Pause & Reflect: Think of different ways you can both let your light shine and do good works.

January 18 - The Power Of God’s Goodness

“… May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do.” (2 Thessalonians 1:11, NLT)

The power of God’s goodness cannot be overstated or over emphasized. The power of His goodness transforms our lives, shapes our character and encourages our faith. Knowing He is good does that! When we experience His goodness, we experience rest in believing Him for His promises. We don’t weary ourselves trying to believe for healing, peace, and direction. Instead, we rest in the fact that He is a good Father and desires to do those things for us!

God’s goodness invites us to trust in Him fully and live abundantly. His goodness strengthens us! It makes all things possible in our thoughts. It cause us to rise and overcome giants of opposition by trusting in a God who loves us, is for us, and has promised us. May our faith prompt us to do good!

Prayer: “Jesus, by the power of your Spirit, prompt me to do good, even as He lead You to do good!”

Pause & Reflect: What good deed or work can you do for God today? Think about where your day will take you and think whose life you can touch with God’s goodness.

January 17: No One Is Good Except God Alone

A man seeking to flatter Jesus or impress others calls Him good. “And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.” (Mark 10:18, ESV)

Jesus wasn’t denying being good…He was challenging the man’s flattering remarks to recognize that if He is good, He is God. Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him and asked him a question, allowing the man to see that he himself did not measure up though he thought he did. And he went away sad because he trusted in his riches. If no one is good except God alone, where does that leave us? It better leave us looking to God alone…the only one who is truly good! We don't inherit eternal life or any promise of God by being good enough – we inherit it by trusting in the One who is truly good.

Prayer: “Jesus, help me know that I will never be able to flatter you with my goodness; only look to You, who are good and be filled with wonder.”

Pause & Reflect: Have you ever tried to impress God? How did that work for you? He is the One who is good and does good all the time.

January 16: All Things Work Together for Good

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, ESV)

This verse is a lifeline in the storms of life. Notice it doesn’t say all things are good—pain, loss, and disappointment are very real. Yet for those who love God and are called by Him, every circumstance will be woven into a larger purpose. The disappointments that sting, the delays that frustrate, even the failures that humble us—God redeems them all.

Your story is no different. He is the Master of taking the pain and disaster of sin’s effect and turning it around. It may not be immediate. It may hurt for a while, but God will turn it around for good if we will only have the faith to believe it. Surrender the “why” questions to Him. Rest in His sovereign love. Know He is good.

Prayer: “Lord, help me know that you will bring good out of this. Amen.”

Pause & Reflect: Declare out loud: Even when I don’t see it, you are working. You never stop working.

January 15: Giants In The Good Land

“The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.” (Numbers 14:7, ESV)

God promises us good things! But often the good things He has promised also come with giants! Giants bigger than us. Giants who live in fortified cities. Giants who refuse to be moved. When Israel was first introduced to the land of promise, they found giants there. And because of fear, were overcome by doubt and unbelief. “How can God expect us to take this land? We really should go back to Egypt!”

Back to Egypt! What does God want? God wants us to know that He is good and He is for us! He wants us to know that it is His great desire to give it. He wants that truth embedded in our hearts so that we would believe that He is well able to make it happen! There is no giant that can stand in the presence of our God!

Prayer: “Jesus, You over came it all on the cross! Nothing is impossible! Like Caleb said to Joshua, “Give me my mountain!”

Pause & Reflect: What giants are keeping you out of His promises?
