101218 Immanuel Tim Franklin Mt 1:18-23 Introduction · Mt 18:4 Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God's kingdom. THE MESSAGE o Little children really do add a certain joy to Christmas. There is something in the heart of child that makes the holiday of Christmas so much fun. o They are fascinated—by lights, sounds, smells. They easily believe—Rudolph, Frosty, Santa. They are filled with such expectations. Jesus loved this about children. Their faith was so simple, their joy so complete, their hearts so lights. o Whoever becomes simple and elemental again,…will rank high in God’s kingdom. The Message John 1:12 says that those who believe become children of God. · A little boy was trying to get to sleep but was frightened. He shouted down from the bedroom, ‘Dad, it’s dark up here and I’m scared.’ His father shouted back, ‘Don’t be afraid. God is with you.’ After a few second’s pause, the boy yelled again: ‘Get up here, Dad - I need somebody with skin on!’ This is the reality of the Incarnation. Isn’t that all our hearts? I need somebody with skin on! · I want to share with us today a portion of scripture that is foundational to our faith. Three things I find in the passage we will look at today: The incarnation is a mystery, a miracle, and marvelous. 1. The Incarnation It’s A Mystery A. Vs. 23, “Behold the virgin shall be with child…” This is a mystery. It is what Mary asked of the angel. I believe you but how is this going to happen? In her own words, “I have known no man.” The supernatural has always been something that attracted man. It gets our attention when things happen that we cannot explain. Crowds followed Jesus because of the supernatural. It is mysterious and it speak of something bigger than ourselves. B. A mystery is something that is a profound secret; something wholly unknown or something kept cautiously concealed, and therefore exciting curiosity or wonder. That is how mystery is defined. Ie. This is what little kids love so much about Christmas when little. Ie. I remember my mom giving me an AM transistor radio on Christmas Eve. It was tuned in so I could listen 89WLS track Santa on radar. i. The Mystery of the incarnation is to be adored. It is there to communicate how God worked out His perfect plan of salvation but it also there to capture our attention. It is mysterious! It causes us to search for the secrets that is hidden in the incarnation and revealed by the Holy Spirit to us. ii. Maybe the Psalm of David, in 139, is about Jesus and not just humanity. What if this was Jesus speaking of himself? Psalms 139:13-16 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. NKJV C. Hear the mystery of Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:45-48 And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit... 47 The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. NKJV i. First Adam made from the earth and was given life; the second Adam came from heaven and was life. Ie. Not only did God come out of man (Mary) but he came out of the earth a cave/stable in Bethlehem. It is so mysterious! D. Behold! The prophecy here quoted is justly ushered in with a Behold, which commands both attention and admiration; for we have here the mystery of godliness, which is, without controversy, great, that God was manifested in the flesh. i. Seed of woman—Genesis not seed of man. There is no seed in woman. Now the woman is pregnant with the Christ child. It is mysterious! It is the power of the most high. ii. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel." NKJV 2. The Incarnation: It’s A Miracle A. Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit Mt 1:18 i. This was supernatural! ii. Mk 16:17 “…signs follow those who believe.” Mary believed, for she said, “Let it be unto me according to your Word.” Luke 1:38 iii. Miracles are often those things we cannot understand because they seem to have no explanation. They are deviations from the known laws of men. Latin: to make wonderful. iv. That God would become flesh, born of a woman who has known no man is a miracle. It is both mysterious and wonderful. It defies the laws of nature. Because it is miraculous it is mysterious! B. Our salvation. i. Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law that we might receive adoption as sons, NKJV ii. He saves us because we acknowledge him as Immanuel. C. It is miraculous in this; God now dwells with sinful man. Sin separated us in the Garden of Eden. When God became man He was dwelling among us. His life was recorded in the Word. He lived the kingdom in front of mankind. We were given the chance to see obedience that comes from the heart and not just the head, or the will. 3. The Incarnation: It’s Marvelous A. Immanuel’s Land Is. 7:14; 8:8,10 i. The ‘virgin prophecy’ appears first in Is 7:14. Isaiah is delivering it to king Ahaz and evil king. ii. Two nations shall come against Judah. Vs.10 it is remembered that Judah is Immanuel’s land and that this is what Assyria will hit and be stopped by. Just as it looks that all will be lost, the flood stops and one is left standing on ‘tippie toes’ reaching/struggling for a breath. iii. Beyond judgment lies hope! All other nations have been destroyed Judah will not be ultimately destroyed. It is a prophetic sign to Judah and to us. Sin may appear to be all powerful but we belong to God! And God will fight for us! The incarnation is marvelous because… B. God with us! God is with us! It is marvelous because it is the Presence of God with us. God with us provides: i. Illumination: light, understanding, Jn 1:4 “In Him was life and the life was the light of men.” ii. Identification—Ex 33:16 sets us apart from all other people. It is not inclusive. iii. Consolation/comfort--Comfort; alleviation of misery, or distress of mind; refreshment of mind or spirits; a comparative degree of happiness in distress or misfortune, springing from any circumstance that abates the evil, or supports and strengthens the mind, as hope, joy, courage and the like. Luke 2:25—Consolation of Israel by Simeon. iv. Exhilaration— Cheerful, joyous, full of life. Acts 3:19 times of refreshing from the Presence. v. Direction—Ex 33:16 if your Presence does not go with us we are not moving. vi. Protection: Dt 4:37 (deliverance) C. The Presence is everything. i. He is our salvation, He is our healing, He is our Life. This is the miracle of Christmas. God’s gift to all mankind that whoever would believe would be save. Conclusion: · We were in darkness. We were afraid. We cried out like our little boy in the beginning. “Dad get up here! I somebody with some skin on.” · God put some skin on for you and for me.
