101215w The Inquiries Christmas Luke 1:18, 34, 43; Mt. 1:2 Tim Franklin Introduction:

Holiday seasons stir up lots of questions for many people.
- Nature of the season does it. “Why do we have it?”
- Christmas is emotional by nature because we face questions that we are able to bury the rest of the year. Ie. Generosity, kindness to all, love, and family.
It is what prompts Lynus to tell the Christmas story in A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Ebenezer Scrooge is force to answer these questions as he faces what is possibly his last Christmas.
At Christmas there are basically four questions that are asked and we find them in the Gospels. They are mans approach to Christmas.

The Careless Question – Luke 1:18 “How shall I know this?”
1. Doubting Question –

i. It is a question that has already settled on an answer. 1. This makes no sense/in the natural. 2. It is the greatest problem that the educated have today when they consider Christ/ or consider Biblical ways. 3. In the natural this cannot be. 4. Spiritual things must be spiritually discerned. ii. It is a question that has already made up its mind or passed judgment. 1. Look at the facts, angel – this cannot be! a. I am old. Luke 1:18 But this is impossible! I'm an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years." TLB b. And my wife is old 2. Choose to believe something other than the truth. iii. It is a question that refuses to believe in spite of the seeming proof.

Foolish question – in spite of a sign it seeks a sign.

i. Zacharias is asking for a sign. 1. Angel is present. a. Not Clarence from It’s a Wonderful Life, but Gabriel. b. God’s voice to his people (the Jews) c. An angel with authority. 2. Brings an answer to his/their prayers – for a son. 3. He will bring you joy and gladness. 4. He will be famous, for many will rejoice at his birth. 5. He will be great in the sight of God. 6. He will turn many to God. ii. Luke 1:18 How can I know this will happen? I'm an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years." NLT iii. Mark 8:11-12 Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him.12 But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation." iv. The Message Bible – Do you expect me to believe this? I am an old man and my wife is an old woman.” NKJV This was a Missouri question, “Show Me!” It was not a question seeking understanding.

Selfish question – it already has an answer. I know a little more about this than you, so let me help you understand.

i. Ie. Do you know what it is like to live with this woman?/man? ii. It assumes the spokesman for God is ignorant.

The angel silenced his doubt.

The Careful Question – Luke 1:34 How can this be?”
1. The Message Bible, “But how? I have never slept with a man.”
2. It is a question not of doubt, but of faith.

i. Acts 2:37 “What shall we do? To which Peter gives encouraging words of hope and direction. ii. Mary believes but does not know how God will do it.

Question seeking understanding.

i. Seek first the Kingdom ii. Ask, seek, knock. iii. Proverbs – seek wisdom like treasure. iv. Solomon was rewarded for his seeking of wisdom.

Seek come with promise

i. Of being filled ii. Of finding. Mt. 7:7

The angel confirmed her faith. He told her how it would happen.

The Considering Question – Luke 1:43 “Why is this granted to me?”
1. Question of worth.

i. The same question posed by John the Baptist at Jesus baptism. Mt. 3:14 …why do you come to me? ii. Luke 18:11-13 … be merciful to me a sinner.

Worth is what Christmas is all about.

i. George Baily of It’s a Wonderful Life – question of worth. ii. Charlie Brown Christmas tree – answers the question of worth. iii. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reign deer – answers a question of worth. iv. Scrooge of Christmas Carol, is given worth/ given what he did not deserve.

She sees the One of greater value. Mary’s baby is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, why is it that you would come to me a common mom with common child?
“Those who are filled with the Spirit have low thoughts of their own merit and high thoughts of God’s favor.” Mt Henry.
Humility –

i. God gives us what we do not deserve. ii. God gives us what we have not earned. iii. When we humble ourselves he lifts us up.

The Correct Question – Mt. 1:2 Where is He, King of the Jews?” Wise men speak.
1. The old sermon title still speaks today, Wise men still seek Him.
2. When you know the truth is beyond yourself, and you can humble accept the fact that God offers what we do not deserve, then the next logical step is, “How do I find Him?”
3. The wise men were following a sign but when they could not locate Jesus, they stopped and asked for directions.
4. The Holy Spirit will point the way.

i. He uses a myriad of signs that point to Jesus. ii. But somewhere someone had to give us directions to him. Conclusion:

What type of questions will you be asking this Christmas season?
- Some of you will be faced with the impossible this Christmas, don’t let you preconceived ideas limit God.
- Others of you will know that God exists, but you will be challenged to seek.
- Still others must come to the place of you are valuable, and you are the lesser when compared with God, but in humility let Him pick you up.
- Some of you are totally lost right now.
  - You need God.
  - Rev. 3:19,20.
  - You must make that decision today.
