101211 The Grinch Failed Tim Franklin
Introduction:

We have been looking at the subject of family over the last four weeks. In Home Alone 1 and 2 we looked the basic needs of people and what happens when those needs go unmet and what happens when we as family meet them. In It’s a Wonderful Life we looked at expectations and conflict resolution as two important topics that families must come to grips with to be successful.
Today’s message, How the Grinch stole Christmas, is for all those who have a Grinch in the house, or work with a Grinch or maybe you are related to one or live by one.
Grinches and Scrooges are basically the same—they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to make other people miserable.
- In How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the Grinch sees all the happy Who’s in Whoville and seeks to steal what he presumes to be the reason for their joy.
- In Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a greedy old man who has no joy, does not want anyone else joyful and even on Christmas wants his employee, Bob Cratchit to work.
There really are people like Scrooge and Grinch in this life.

It’s What Grinches Do
1. A Grinch is someone who does not value others.
  1. Judas betrayed Jesus. He valued thirty pieces of silver over the Son of God.
  2. Matthew 26:15 "What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. NKJV
  3. Betrayal is major hurt to overcome. But it is possible through Christ Jesus.
2. A Grinch is someone who thinks only of themselves.
  1. Cuddly as a cactus—people don’t like to be around them because they cause you pain.
    1. “A big man is one who makes us feel bigger when we are with him.” A quote on a picture of Rusty, Joshua and I when Joshua caught his first big bass. When I read that quote I thought of that picture and how Rusty made me and my son feel while in his presence.
    2. We don’t like being around people who are always negative, always hurting, or just don’t want to get to close because you know they will hurt you.
  2. He’s a bad banana with a greasy black peel
    1. Rotten-they knowingly or unknowingly make people miserable.
    2. Attracts flies- satan is lord of the dung pile.
    3. Luke 14:34-35 "Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" NKJV
  3. It is pride at its worse. It puts you at the center of the worlds universe.
3. A Grinch is someone who hearts is to small.
  1. Small heart explains his terrible disposition.
  2. A big heart has room for others.
4. A Grinch is someone who is mean. I Cor 13:1-ff. They lack love. Love is not easily anger, not rude, not self seeking, keeps no record of wrong. Without love you are as cuddly as a cactus.
  1. You’re a mean one mister Grinch.
  2. Growls at good things.
What behind a Grinch
1. Behind every Grinch is wounded heart. Hurting people hurt people. I remember as a little boy a young Springer spaniel that Grandpa had. It was a cuddly dog with long soft hair. I got ran over and when it did grandpa and I ran to it as is lay in the road. My first response was to hug just like you would see on Lassie. But Grandpa stopped me in my tracks and boy was I glad. That dog bit my grandpa really hard as he was trying to help it. Hurting people hurt people!
  1. When those 10 needs I spoke of in the sermon Home alone are not met you end up with a wounded heart. When those needs are violated you end up with a wounded heart. When trust is broke you have a wounded heart. Without healing that wounded place of the heart when anyone get close to it, it will bite you. Just like my grandfather’s dog bit him.
  2. Please go back to last week’s message on expectations and conflict resolution.
2. Behind every wounded heart is a door to negative spiritual influences.
  1. 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant (stay alert); because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. NKJV
    1. Watch any program on the animal kingdom, especially regarding carnivores, and you will most likely see animals that prey on other animals looking for the weak or wounded ones.
    2. The devil loves to wounded people they are the easiest to take down and they are the ones most like to hurt/wound others.
  2. Ie. We would probably ‘freak out’ if we could see all the bad bacterias and germs on our skin. Your skin protects you from them. But if you get a wound, an open in your skin those germs will come rushing in to infect the open. The bad germ was there all the time. But when the wound came the germ manifested infection.
  3. Genesis 4:6-7 So the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." NKJV
  4. 2 Sam 13, Absalom, Tamar, Amnon David. The rape of a sister, the hatred of a bother, and the inaction of a father. Gen 13:15: Amnon loved her until he was sick then hated her after the rape. Spiritual influences, germs, demons waiting to work through the wounds that get open in our lives.
3. Behind every Grinch is a little good.
  1. He has a dog that he cares for even though he abuses it. He gets Cindy Lou Who a drink of water.
  2. Scrooge gives Bob Crachit an extra lump of coal for the office on Christmas Eve and gives him Christmas day off.
  3. Grinch and Scrooges have a little good in them. I include this thought so that we are not blinded into thinking that Grinch or Scrooge are hard hearted killers that are beyond saving.
Responding to a Grinch
1. Let them push you into God’s arms not out of.
  1. David had a Grinch in his life. His name was Saul. Unbeknownst to Saul, it was he who pushed David closer to God.
    1. David desire to serve Saul—he wanted Saul to be successful. If Saul was successful, Israel would be successful. He stayed in the Word and prayed.
    2. David desire to honor Saul. He recognized Saul’s authority as King.
    3. David walked in the fear of the Lord, God had made Saul king. David was not going to touch that. When he had the chance to take Saul out, he did not touch God’s anointed.
  2. We must live for God no matter what others do.
2. Walk in forgiveness.
  1. Mt 18. We are in spiritual trouble when we begin to think someone owes us, especially when we have been forgiven a debt that we can’t ever repay God.
  2. Forgiveness is the ointment for the wounded heart.
3. Keep your meditations pure. Beware of self pity.
  1. Choose to think good thoughts. Remember the 10 needs we require as people? Identify the need you are missing and let Jesus be the one to meet it. Without that our meditations can get defiled and we will begin to think like Kevin McAllister in Home Alone, “I wish my family would just disappear.” Then he went into a fantasy world for the rest of the film.
  2. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy — meditate on these things. NKJV
  3. Stay with the fruit of the Spirit. It is the ‘high road’.
  4. Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. NKJV
4. Check your own expectations.
  1. Are they to high for a person to attain?
  2. Are they unrealistic?
  3. Are they pushing you away from the person you love?
5. Maintain your joy.
  1. Nehemiah 8:10 …for the joy of the Lord is your strength." NKJV
  2. I believe it was Jerry Savell who said, “If the devil can’t steal your joy he can’t take your goods.”
6. Love
  1. Without love flooding our hearts it is easy to let the Grinch become an enemy we despise.
  2. Romans 12:20 Therefore, "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." NKJV We need to read this from the Message Bible to understand its impact. It is not about doing good deeds to them ‘burn’ if they do not repent. It is about flooding them with love until love gets the best of them.
  3. Rom 12:20-21Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he's thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. ²¹Don't let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good. Message Bible

Conclusion:

Grinch after stealing all the Christmas gifts and dinners, listens to all the whos down in Whoville and hears them singing. Then he gets the revelation. Christmas is not in the gifts and dinners. It is in the heart! It is not just once a year but everyday all year. If Jesus lives big in you no Grinch will ever steal Christmas—you will have it every day.
Some of you are facing a Grinch and you need God’s grace to love.
A changed heart changes relationships. It is the theme of almost every Christmas movie.
