100919 Faith Don’t Be Caught Without It

Introduction:

Fast begins on Oct 1-21 fasting for Justice
Faith is one of the most valuable weapons of our warfare. Without it the Word of God is just words on a page or sounds in the ear. Faith is what gives the Word its release in our lives. Or Faith releases the power of the Word of God into our lives. Faith gives us access to the impossible. It releases the supernatural and rests in the character of God.
You do not want to be caught without faith. Especially when in the midst of trial.

Faith Pleases God
1. If you want to make God happy, simply believe.
  1. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. NKJV
  2. Faith—to rely up, trust, have confidence in. Faith is an interesting word to try and demonstrate and even hard to explain so that people can measure it or know if they have it. Jesus tried to describe what it looked like when he spoke of faith as a little child.
    1. Faith, then, is trust in God's eschatological act in Christ and hope for the consummation of the work that God has thus begun. In the interim it is trust that God will not let believers be confounded but that as they are dead with Christ, so they will be kept until they are also raised with him. Insofar as faith is faithfulness, it is faithfulness to God's saving act in Christ, to the one name in which is salvation (Acts 4:12). The obedience of faith is obedience to the way of salvation in Christ, which includes, of course, turning aside from sin. In every dimension it means a radical reorientation to God that governs all life. Hence faith is the Christian religion and believers are Christians.   3. To please—comes from a word that means acceptable, to take pleasure in. When we are in faith we are literally pleasing God. Faith is what unlocks or opens God’s heart to accept us and to take pleasure in us. Grace comes through faith. Faith elicits a favorable response from God in which He accepts and take pleasure in us and is satisfied in Himself.
  4. Faith in Jesus/the work of God in Christ satisfies the justice of God. He is just because of who He is. It is internal for God not external. He is not crying justice because of some external force but from within because of His very nature.
2. A Happy Jesus
  1. Jesus marveled at great faith. Matthew 8:10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! NKJV
  2. Marvel-thaumazo-worthy of admiration, excellent. It is that feeling you get when you see the ocean for the first time, or a mountain, Niagra Falls, a spectacular sunset.
  3. It was a God response of pleasure in the Centurion not because of who he was, not because of what he had or had not done, it was because he believed/had faith in Jesus.
  4. The words ‘your faith’ in the Gospels seems to put a smile on Jesus faith. He seems happy to speak them to those who believe.
    1. Issue of blood. Matthew 9:22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, "Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well." And the woman was made well from that hour. NKJV
    2. The Canaanite mother. Matthew 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. NKJV
    3. Bartimaeus in Mark 10:52 Then Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road. NKJV
3. If you want to make Jesus happy. Or if you want to please God step into the place of faith. It is that simple.
  1. Faith releases grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. NKJV
  2. When grace comes into you so does peace, rest, confidence, LIFE!
Please Increase Our Faith Lk 17:1-5 How many have prayed that prayer before?
1. Increase our Faith
  1. Luke 17:5 And the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." NKJV
  2. Luke 17:6 But the Master said, "You don't need more faith. There is no 'more' or 'less' in faith. If you have a bare kernel of faith, say the size of a poppy seed, you could say to this sycamore tree, 'Go jump in the lake,' and it would do it. THE MESSAGE
  3. Is a prayer
    1. born out of desperation
    2. born out of desire
  4. Jesus answer seems odd. What He is saying is that you do not need more faith. Faith , simply is.
    1. It takes the same amount of faith of believe God for $1000 as it does for $100k. That is why Jesus answers their cry with, “if you have the faith the size of mustard seed…” his point: mustard seed can move mountains/mulberry trees, $1000 or $100k dollars.
    2. Faith is faith –no matter what it is aimed.
    3. So the cry of their prayer—whether out of desperation or desire is to trust God more.
2. How does faith come?
  1. Faith Comes from hearing the message not having heard. It is in the constant hearing of the Word of God that it takes root in the heart.
  2. It is by repeatedly hearing the same message that we believe it, rest in it, and are assured of it.
  3. I told Kelly I loved her when I married her. Was that enough? No. Why? Faith/confidence/trust reliability come with hearing it over and over. I joke with my wife, “I told you I loved you when I married you and if it ever changed I’d let you know.”
    1. She needs to hear it over and over as well me from her.
    2. As life circumstances change we need to know that the Word remains above those circumstances so that we do not get under the circumstances.
3. The Word has Life in it.
  1. John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. NKJV
  2. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living … and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. NKJV
  3. It is the living Word that gives us a living faith!
  4. The Hebrew writer invites us to enter into His rest. When you walk in faith you enter the rest. The children of Israel failed to believe and therefore failed to enter into the rest of God.
Living To Please Him
1. Life in the Spirit is pleases to God. Not because of the right works aspect but because of the faith that is expressed through the works.
  1. Romans 8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. NKJV
  2. 1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now we are children of God; … for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. NKJV
    1. Faith is the substance of things hoped for.
    2. The greater we believe that He is coming to receive us the more of his lifestyle is expressed through us in purity. The more we know He is and that He is a rewarder the more we work on the garments.
2. 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; 2 …For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, … 7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. 8 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit. NKJV
  1. This has to do with the garment we spoke of last week.
  2. It is a cry in the heart of the born again believer to life for God and to live pleasing to Him.
3. It is faith that pleases Him. And a life lived in holiness reflects that faith-not out of dead work but living faith! Faith without works is dead. And works without faith is death. James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. NKJV

Conclusion:

Faith. Gal 5:6For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love. NLT
God gives a grace that precedes the entrance of His Word into the heart. It is grace that you are even drawn to Him today. Faith is the response He is looking for.
Those who find the love of God are free to put their faith in Him.
