The Broken Vessel

080316 The Broken Vessel Palm Sunday Tim Franklin Introduction:

Good Morning and Happy Palm Sunday to you.
Palm Sunday is always the Sunday prior to Resurrection Sunday that we celebrate each year as Christians. It marked a major transition point in Jesus ministry. It was a switch from ministry to people as a focal point to completion of the mission—death on the cross.
Mark 14:3-9 marks the beginning of this transition. Jesus calls her action a memorial that will be remembered everywhere the Gospel is preached. When I read this passage from the Word of God I have to ask myself what is so important about this event? Can’t I preach the Gospel without remembering this woman? Yes, but why would I? Lets find out why this passage is so significant.

Memorial--something designed to preserve the memory of a person, event, etc., as a monument or a holiday.
Mark 14:3-9 is such a memorial. It is something that is done to preserve the memory of this woman, the event and what it prophetically proclaimed.

This passage is significant because of what it communicates and illustrates.

The Broken Vessel

The story begins. Mark 14:3 And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. NKJV
Four parts that we must give our attention to

i. The woman—she is the giver in this story. ii. The vessel—it was made of a very expensive marble. iii. The oil—was a very fragrant oil/perfume. 1 pound worth as one of the Gospels state. iv. The receiver—this is Jesus. He receives the oil and her faith and love.

What we learn from the story.

i. Jesus commends the woman who has faith enough to perceive who he really is. 1. She is willing to use/give to Him that which is of great worth. He was worth it! She recognized who He is! And there was nothing that was to great for Him. 2. She did something profoundly prophetic. a. She anointed him for burial in advance—not knowing he would be tried a criminal and denied burial anointing rights; not knowing he would die so close to the Sabbath that he would be denied burial rights because of timing. b. She anointed his head with the precious oil. That is symbolic. That God would take precious anointing oil (symbol of Holy Spirit) and pour it out on the head of his Son. i. It would serve to mark His authority ii. It would serve to strengthen Him for what lie ahead iii. Ps 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; NKJV iv. Ps 92:10 But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil. NKJV v. Read Ps 133. There He commands blessing forevermore. ii. For the oil to be poured out the vessel had to be broken. What was most costly, was contained inside the precious. Alabaster flasks had long necks on them and they were seal to preserve the fragrance and the oil. To be used the vessel had to be broken. iii. Immediately the room was filled with the fragrance of Spikenard oil. Jn 12:3 iv. And Jesus with joy receives this woman and what she does. He fully understand the significance of this. 1. It was common for people to bring offerings for the poor at Passover. That is why Judas and the disciples were upset with her. 2. Jesus understood they could help the poor at any time but He would not always be physically present with them.

Lets go deeper.

The Broken Body

This story is a prophetic picture of the life of Jesus. To me, here is where the memorial begins. Jesus uses her act of faith and love to demonstrate the Kingdom,
Again there are four parts to the picture.

i. The giver – is Jesus and we see this clearly in the Crucifixion. ii. The vessel—is His body iii. The oil – is the valuable fragrant, beauty of the Kingdom of God held in Christ. iv. The receiver -- is all who would believe. When we believe we receive costly things of the Kingdom as it is poured out of the precious vessels. The vessel holds that which is fragrant and costly.

It unfolds

i. Jesus was willing to give to us that which is of great worth. He recognized we were worth it and there was nothing that was to great for Him to give for us. ii. He anoints everyone—whosoever would believe can become Sons of God. iii. He anoints those who believe with the fragrant oil of His presence. He does this in preparation for our death. 1. Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. NKJV 2. Col 3:8-10 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, NKJV 3. Eph 4:22-24 put off , concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. NKJV iv. He anoints our heads. 1. It would serve to mark His authority 2. It would serve to strengthen Him for what lie ahead 3. For the oil to be poured out the vessel had to be broken.

i. 1 Cor 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you ; …." NKJV ii. What was most costly, was contained inside the precious. Jesus, the Alabaster flask had to be broke to release what He brought into the earth. All of heaven was seal up in Him and the cross would be the instrument to release all of heaven on earth. Salvation, healing, deliverance, prosperity, love, sound mind, peace-not like the world gives. To be used the vessel had to be broken. iii. We had no access to heavens oil until after the cross and resurrection. 1. Now we come boldly to the throne room of grace 2. Now there is nothing in our way to accessing God. 3. The more I go in the more I smell like heaven!!!!

The Broken Church

Concerning the church
There are four parts

i. The giver that is us. ii. The vessel—that is our lives iii. The oil—this is the Holy Spirit in us. iv. The receiver—is anyone we choose to touch with the presence of God.

1 John 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. NKJV
1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, NKJV
We must be broken in order for that which is most valuable and precious to come out to touch others.

i. 2 Cor 12:15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved. NKJV ii. When we are broken the more the fragrance of Christ is experienced by everyone around us. 2 Cor 2:15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. NKJV Conclusion:

Palm Sunday was a turning point for Jesus
Will this Palm Sunday be a turning point for you.
