071104 Hope the Pathway to Rest Tim Franklin Introduction

Rom 4:18-20 who, contrary to hope , in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be." 19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness." NKJV
Rom 4:18-19 Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, "That's how many descendants you will have!" Holy Bible, New Living Translation
Rom 4:18 When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn't do but on what God said he would do. THE MESSAGE
From Parade magazine comes the story of self-made millionaire Eugene Land, who greatly changed the lives of a sixth-grade class in East Harlem. Mr. Lang had been asked to speak to a class of 59 sixth-graders. What could he say to inspire these students, most of whom would drop out of school? He wondered how he could get these predominantly black and Puerto Rican children even to look at him. Scrapping his notes, he decided to speak to them from his heart. "Stay in school," he admonished, "and I'll help pay the college tuition for every one of you." At that moment the lives of these students changed. For the first time they had hope. Said one student, "I had something to look forward to, something waiting for me. It was a golden feeling." Nearly 90 percent of that class went on to graduate from high school.
Hope is an incredible power in our lives and it is crucial to the message of rest. We do not always think of hope when we think of rest. Just as we do not think of faith first when we think of rest. To most rest is the ceasing of labor to gain a reprieve and we are getting that but the greater rest God is calling us to is to rest in Him.

Understanding Hope
1. Historical

i. For Plato, hope is the impulse toward the beautiful and the good. ii. For the Greeks, hope is a comfort in distress iii. To the Hebrew, hope meant resting in God's hands, depends on his people's relationship to him. Therefore we must lean on him and stay positioned in him. iv. The righteous hope in God, and fearing him need fear nothing else.

Discovered

i. Hope is expectation of good. It is linked with trust and yearning, and differentiated from fear. So long as there is life there is hope (Eccl 9:4). ii. The life of the righteous is grounded in a hope that implies a future because its point of reference is God. To hope is to trust. iii. It is not our own projection but confidence in what God will do. iv. Hope looks to him whom none can control. Biblical

i. The NT concept of hope is essentially governed by the OT. ii. When fixed on God, hope embraces expectation, trust, and patient waiting. It is linked to faith, as in Heb 11:1, which stresses the certainty of what is divinely given. (from Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, abridged edition, Copyright © 1985 by William B. Hope Deferred
1. Prov 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes,it is a tree of life.
2. NKJV Prov 13:12 Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick, but a sudden good break can turn life around. THE MESSAGE
3. Hebrew word for deferred means to prolong or draw out. To make something go a long time. Prov. 13:12 is to hope for a long time without seeing.
4. Hopelessness is a killer! I was watching a prisoner of war program. The common theme/difference between those who came home and those who died their was this: loss of hope. Prisoner after prisoner said, when others lost hope it was not long before they died.
5. How do we lose hope?

i. We look at our circumstances. This is a strong prison! ii. We consider what we see and hear. I see the others who died, I can hear their cries. iii. We ponder the power of the Adversary. The enemy is to wicked, merciless, and strong. iv. We lose site of the Word! Job 31:24 If I have made gold my hope, Or said to fine gold, 'You are my confidence';…28 I would have denied God who is above. NKJV 1. This passage speaks of trusting or resting in other things besides the word of God. 2. To do that is to deny God.

We are looking to enter a radical rest. That place of rest cannot be found outside the Word of God. Because the word is what gives an eternal hope.

Hope Based on the Word
1. A look at David-notice that hope is need in time of desperation not times when all is well. It is the precursor to faith!

i. Ps 119:49-50 Remember the word to Your servant, Upon which You have caused me to hope. 50 This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life. NKJV ii. Ps 119:81 But I hope in Your word. NKJV iii. Ps 119:114 You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word. NKJV iv. Ps 119:116 Uphold me according to Your word, that I may live; And do not let me be ashamed of my hope. NKJV v. Ps 119:147 I rise before the dawning of the morning, And cry for help; I hope in Your word. NKJV

FF Bosworth in Christ the Healer said, “It is the word of God that lets us know what we can believe him for.”
Roman 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing the message and the message through the Word of God. The word is the creative force! And that is what gives men hope.

i. Rom 4:18 When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn't do but on what God said he would do. THE MESSAGE ii. Note the position of Abram. He is resting not worrying! In quiet confidence he is walking out his life.

In some languages believed and hoped are combined as "in expecting he believed strong against the thing that made him doubt." (from the UBS Handbook Series. Copyright (c) 1961-1997, by United Bible Societies) It is that “Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered and no one was there.”

i. Abraham got his faith from knowing the one who promised! ii. That leads us to our last point.

Hope The Doorway to Rest
1. When you know God you can rest. The more you know of Him the deeper your rest will be.

i. Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. NKJV

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. NKJV

i. Hope and Faith are closely tied together. Heb. 11, Ro. 4:18. Rom 4:18 ii. The Word gives me hope! iii. Hope is the object of my faith! iv. Faith is the substance!

The Holy Spirit will cause us to abound in hope. Rom 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. NKJV

i. To many people get moved out of their happy place to quickly and the bottom line is: We do not know Him. ii. Heb 3:6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. NKJV Conclusion:

God wants to give us hope! Jer 29:11-12 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. NKJV
Hopes focus is not on what is to be given but upon the God who gives it!
