In reading through Mt 24 recently I was challenged to look at some of the common requirements of the last days that we have a tendency to over look.

Because they are in the last days passage we seem to make them bigger than they really are.
Because they are in the last days passage we do think of them as applicable for today.
Because they are in the last days and we do not anticipate being there we do not prepare daily as we should.

I want to spend some time in Mt 24:4-14 looking at facets of this last days passage that we should be practicing everyday.

Jesus gave us the things we need to be developing now
Don’t be deceived
Don’t be troubled
Don’t be offended
Don’t let love grow cold
Endure!

In other words, if we will consistently do today what will be required of us them we will be far better off.
Mt 24:6-7 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. NKJV

What is trouble?

Webster- Notified of sudden danger; surprised with fear; to shock suddenly with the approach of evil.

i. Anxiety ii. Worry iii. Panic attack

passive present- throoumai – troubled.

i. to be troubled in mind, to be frightened, alarmed: Mt 24:6; Mk 13:7; 2 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, NKJV 1. NT:4531 saleuoo; to be fearful or in a state of panic. 2. properly, of the motion produced by winds, storms, waves, etc.; to agitate or shake: Mt 11:7—a reed shaken by the wind. 3. to shake down, overthrow, i.e. tropically, to cast down from one's (secure and happy) state, Ac 2:25-w/God at my side I will not be shaken. 4. a state of fear brought on by surprise. A bad report, newspaper, news cast, something unsuspecting. etc.

Examples of:

i. Martha; Lk 10:41-42 And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her." NKJV ii. Lk 24:36-38 Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, "Peace to you." 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. 38 And He said to them, "Why are you troubled ? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? NKJV

Jesus is saying to his disciples and to us today. Don’t be surprised and move into a place of fear or panic. Survival in that time depends on your keeping your wits about you. The propagation/spread of the Gospel also depends on you keeping your head.

i. If you panic you forget your mission. ii. It is the difference between the soldier who turns and runs at the sign his line has been broken through or he rallies others to fill the gap and fight hard. iii. If the light of God is to shine brightest in the days it is darkest we must have character that does not let us panic.

What is the problem with Trouble?

It stirs up doubts. When Jesus showed up in the room the disciples were scared.

i. Luke 24:38 And He said to them, "Why are you troubled ? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? NKJV ii. Doubts rob us of what faith in God provides for us.

It is motivated by fear.

i. Fear gives us a poverty mentality. ii. Fear is misplaced faith. We believe for the worse rather than the best.

Causes us to run from victory. If God is for us who can be against us!

i. Lev 26:36-37 will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; the sound of a shaken leaf shall cause them to flee; they shall flee as though fleeing from a sword, and they shall fall when no one pursues. 37 They shall stumble over one another, as it were before a sword, when no one pursues; NKJV

Causes us to become selfish. Cares about itself only or makes us get into the flesh.

i. Luke 10:41 Martha was anxious, worried, concerned for herself. ii. merimnaoo, merimnoo 1. to be anxious; to be troubled with cares: absolutely, Mt 6:27,31 2. to care for, look out for (a thing); to seek to promote one's interests: ta heautees, Mt 6:34 Thayers

How do I Stay Out of Trouble?

Move out of the place of double mindedness.

i. Jas 1:6-8 he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. NKJV ii. Double-minded 1. will not receive from God 2. Thinks both ways – so he is blown and tossed back and forth. 3. He is unstable in all his ways. iii. Purpose in your heart to not be double-minded.

Increase your faith.

i. Lk 17:5-7 And the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith ." 6 So the Lord said, "If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. NKJV ii. If your words can move trees—what will you be afraid of? iii. The way you increase your faith is to stay in the word. Ro. 10:17 Faith comes by hearing the message and the message through the Word of God. NKJV

Make God your Rock!

i. Heb 6:19-20 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. NKJV

Pursue Peace – is a place of rest.

i. Peace-eireenee, tranquility, the absence from rage and havoc. ii. Isa 26:3-4 You will keep him in perfect peace , Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, NKJV 1. Come from a mind that is set on Him 2. Comes from a heart that truly trusts Him iii. Jn 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. NKJV

Stay connected to the Holy Spirit

i. Jn 14:26-27 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit , whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives NKJV 1. The Holy Spirit is the helper and if you stay tight with him you find peace. ii. Jn 15:26-27 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. NKJV 1. The Helper will talk to you about Jesus and Truth when you need it. iii. Ac 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses NKJV 1. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to be witnesses. Conclusion:

In Mt 24, Jesus speaks of the Last Days. He gives us five things to be aware. Five things that we should be already practicing on a daily basis.
If we believe this is the Book of God then we must take seriously his word and work on these things in our daily living.
As parents and grandparents we impart many things to our children—including our trouble.

IE. Joshua when he was little came running down the hall. There is a monster in my room. “Oh, Joshua, it is just a devil, rebuke it and go to bed.” He did and went to bed.
Lightening – don’t disrespect it. Speak of its power and beauty. Lay down on the floor at night and watch it together.
Flossie, my grandmother taught me to be terrified of everything-snakes are poisonous, frogs give you warts, bumble bees sting repeatedly, trees were for falling out of and breaking your arms, dogs bites, mosquitoes cause welts, poison ivy grows everywhere you don’t mow, the creek has water moccasins, and if you do not change your undies every day you are sure to get into an accident!
