070826 The Joy of Living Kind Tim Franklin Introduction:

William Penn once said, “I expect to pass through life but once. If, therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do, to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it. As I shall not pass this way again.” We want to look at the power of kindness.
Paul in writing to the Corinthians said that love is –Kindness. It is a powerful attribute to a believers life.
Kindness opens many doors. So look at this virtue today.
Prov 20:28 Kindness and truth preserve the king; and his throne is upholden by kindness. ASV
Prov 3:3-4 Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man. NASB

The Truth About Kindness
1. OT-hesed

i. Is practiced in an ethically binding relationship of relatives, hosts, allies friends and rulers. It is fidelity to covenant obligations real or implied. ii. Is freely given. "Freedom of decision" is essential. The help is vital, someone is in a position to help the helper does so in his own freedom and this "is the central feature in all the texts"

i. Moral goodness, integrity: Rom 3:12 ii. Kindness: Rom 2:4 It is the kindness of God that leads to repentance. iii. The word is a human attribute in Rom 3:12 (quoting Ps 14:1). iv. In Rom 2:4 and 11:22 it denotes God's gracious attitude to sinners either before Christ or in and through Christ. In Titus 3:4 ff. the fullness of salvation in Christ displays it— 1. Titus 3:4-7 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. NKJV. 2. Eschatological consummation forms its content in Eph 2:7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. NKJV v. is a fruit of the Spirit in Gal 5:22, it is again associated with the Spirit in 2 Cor 6:6, and it is based on the similar attitude of the Lord in Col 3:12. 1. Gal 5:22-24 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. NKJV 2. 2 Cor 6:4-6 But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, 5 in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; 6 by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, NKJV 3. Col 3:12-13 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do NKJV

Other translations of this word

i. Lovingkindness, mercy, grace, favor ii. KINDNESS and Loving-Kindness (Heb. hesed, "desire, zeal"). Zeal toward another in a good sense: 1. Of men towards men, as shown in doing mutual favors, benefits (Gen 21:23; 2 Sam 10:2); compassion for the afflicted (Job 6:14; "pity," KJV). The formula to "show kindness" is frequent in Scripture (2 Sam 3:8; 9:1,7), and in 2 Sam 9:3 there is the expression "to whom I may show the kindness of God," i.e., "like that of God," or "for the sake of God." 2. Of God toward men, as shown in mercies, benefits, and so on (Ps 31:21; 107:43; 117:1; etc.). Kindness is also the rendering of the Grk. chrestotes, "moral goodness," and so "benignity" (Rom 2:4; Gal 5:22; 2 Cor 6:6; Eph 2:7; Col 3:12). Ungers Bible Dictionary

It is a kingly attribute according to Solomon that preserves a man, ministry, business.
It is a noble action

i. Kindness is one of the goals of Christian living. It brings favor with both God and man.

The Kindness Connection
1. Kindness and truth

i. Truth Heb. Emeth- 1. firmness, faithfulness, sureness, 2. reliability, stability, continuance 3. used of testimony and judgment 4. used of divine instruction ii. Truth is God’s seal. When truth and kindness are put together they become essential moral qualities that bring favor to both God and man. iii. Church history reveals that those whose lives have been woven into kindness and truth—they have ushered in great change and literally saved nations. 1. John Wesley changed the lives of coal miners with kindness and truth a. They had to retrain the mules in the mines because the miners were always swearing at the mules. When they got saved and stopped swearing the mules were confused. 2. William Booth of the Salvation Army-kindness and truth. 3. The anointing of God flourishes in an atmosphere of kindness and truth. a. We have told people for to long about how bad God is.—He will send you to hell, He will punish you, He wants nothing to do with you… b. It is time for a revival of kindness to come to America! The world needs to see how kind God is. That is why we pray for the sick and believe for miracles. That is why the church needs to feel the pressure to produce kind miracles that reveal the goodness of God!

God and humanity—God was that way with us.

i. Romans 5:8 While we were enemies of God, He was showing us kindness in sending His one and only Son to take our punishment. ii. Who God is, is also required of us to be. Luke 6:35-36 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. NKJV

The Kindness that Connects-Characteristics of Kindness
1. Kindness is attractive - Prov 19:22 what is desired in a man is kindness , and a poor man is better than a liar. NKJV

i. We want our Gospel, good news to be attractive but first it must come through vessels that attract and do not repel. ii. At lunch with pastors this week one pastor who regularly is out on the streets said, “It take weeks building relationship with people to overcome what “Christians” have done to them, before they trust us enough to listen to our Gospel.”

Kindness is used to measure a person - Prov 19:22 Kindness makes a man attractive. And it is better to be poor than dishonest. TLB

i. We live in a very untrusting society today. It is not the Christian/Judea culture that our country was founded in. When Humanism began taking God out of our culture, kindness began leaving also and our world started becoming more cruel. 1. School teachers are now often the victims of children who do not know the kindness of God or man. When confronted these children now bring in their parents who “know” their child would never do anything wrong. 2. Our culture is now one of car jackings, 7-11 shootings, stealing, corporate conspiracies of which men have no moral conscience regarding kindness. 3. Proverbs 19:22 sets a measure for how we are received. People unknowingly will measure us by our kindness. 4. Eph 4:31-32 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. NKJV

Kindness opens doors

i. Kindness is one expression of love, 1 Cor 13:4-5 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; NKJV

Kindness opens eyes – to see the truth

i. Doug Addison said it so well and in so many ways last week-“We have to open peoples eyes before they will open their hearts. 1. Woman at the well-Jesus showed kindness to her. 2. The leper - Matt 8:2-3 and behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing , You can make me clean." 3 Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. NKJV 3. Putting the soldiers ear back on that Peter cut off. 4. Not condemning the woman that the Pharisees came to kill. John

Kindness opens hearts

i. When people experience kindness it opens their heart. You see it all the time in children. When one shows another kindness, walls drop, hugs are given and sharing begins. Ie. One child is coloring another is watching. When the one watching is offered a crayon and a picture to color-smiles break out and now conversation begins as each work to make the world a better place while focused on their part of the world. Conclusion:

Invitation to meet a kind God
- While I was God’s enemy he sent his son to love me.
- I does not matter what you have done—God is willing to accept you just as you are.
  - Billy Graham made the song famous—Just as I am without one plea…
Some of you Christians may need to come and repent this morning for painting such a wrong picture of your God.
- You have not been kind and God has pointed it out to you.
- You may need to repent to a child, spouse, family member because you have not been kind.
We serve a KIND God!!
