The Wounded Father - Part II

Introduction:

In the Lk.13 Jesus show the self righteous crowd the tragic condition of their own heart. He gives a parable teaching that God is basically a God of second chances, respond now.
In Lk.13:22-ff, He warns them of the consequences of not responding now.
In Lk. 14, Jesus is invited to a party that “He crashes” He tells the religious you have been given an invitation don’t pass it up.
- They do and he invites the poor, maimed, lame and blind of the city.
- Then extends the invitation to those outside the city. Now look at vs. 25, The multitudes are following Jesus. The very ones he said he would invite if the pharisees refused.
Last week we looked at chapter 15 and the people that Jesus was trying to reach. He told this story to the Pharisees, the religious people of his in an attempt to get them to see the Father’s heart.
Today we will look at the Father’s heart toward the religious of his day as we look at the second part of the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

Lost at Home
1. Characteristics of the older brother

i. He can’t understand why the house is being turned upside down over this lost son. Why all the singing? The celebrating? Why all the lights? The singing, celebrating, banning waving, dancing, and lights are the response of heart of gratitude. Something the older son has lost. ii. He is looking at the miracle of his younger brother from the outside, not the inside and therefore he is quite religious in his approach to the situation. iii. He does not grasp the privilege of being so close to the father and ends up living unfulfilled. 1. Without this meaning, purpose and direction he just works through life not enjoying the privileges. He is bored. 2. And boredom causes him in times of weakness to have a longing for the “far country” to have a “bit of experience”. 3. Charlie Daniels Longhaired Country Boy “Preacher man talkin’ on TV, puttin’ down the rock and roll, wants me to send a donation because he is worried about my soul. Jesus walked on the water, now I know that is true, but sometimes I think that the preacher man wants to do a little walkin’ too…” a. Country - Strongs 5561 Gr. chora (kho'_rah); feminine of a derivative of the base of 5490 through the idea of empty expanse; room, i.e. a space of territory (more or less extensive; often including its inhabitants): b. Strongs 5490 chasma (khas'_mah); from a form of an obsolete prim chao (to "gape" or "yawn"); a "chasm" or vacancy (impassable interval): gulf c. Far away Gr. Makran strongs 3112 far, a great way, long distance. d.

Why is he bored and discontent with being so close to the Father?

i. He loves his Father and is loved by his father but he takes it for granted that he is hardly conscious of it. He is lost at home! 1. Couples can easily take each other for granted until they are separated by space and time or the grave. They don’t think about love they share—it does not occur to them to express in words the love they have for each other. They no longer experience what they have. *It never occurs to the son to express what the Father means to him. 2. Christianity is much the same way. People grow up in the church, or get saved young and as time goes by they take for granted the love they share with the Father. They forget they are not deserving, they forget they are forgiven…even if they have stayed at home! 3. This kind of faith is no longer a joy or a liberation it is a burden. I have to read the word, I have to pray, I have to stay at home. A take it for granted faith is empty. 4. The worst thing we can do is to let our Christianity become a thing taken for granted. It is like wearing prodigal garments! 5. The older brother is living Rev. 2:4—he has forgotten his first love. Only the man who gives thanks retains the wonder of God’s fatherly love. ii. He is no longer living in the miracle of salvation. His father saves him—all the father has is his. The father keeps him—he doesn’t have to go make a name for himself. The provides for him—all that the Father has gained in life is his. The miracle has lost its meaning! 1. Christianity is not a Philosophy. It is living your life in the midst of a miracle called salvation. il. The reason why Paul tells us to always rejoice is to keep us in the center of the miracle. Paul as a Pharisee hated the younger brother(new Christians) Yet in the midst of his hatred he experienced the mercy of the Father and not His fist. 2. Living with the Father is boring.

Looking for Love
1. Lk 15:28 "But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. NKJV
2. The Father is looking for the elder son to respond with love towards his prodigal brother.

i. The father hears of his anger and in verse 28 makes the first step towards this angry son. Note that the father is going for the heart of this son. ii. The father is looking for love in the older son’s heart. iii. He finds judgment.

The older son disassociates himself with his younger prodigal brother. Vs. 30 “this son of yours…” He does not say this brother of mine

i. He does not realize that he very words betray the fact that he is no longer with the Father. ii. His heart is not in tune with the Father! His heart is at odds with his father. iii. We can go to church and be around the Father all the time but if we do not have his heart then we are just as guilty as the prodigal of being in a “far country”. iv. *His heart is not in tune with the Father’s because his heart is at odds with the Father’s. The Christian whose heart is not inflamed with the glowing love of Jesus for the lost, is alienating himself from God in a very subtle but dreadful way. Now we see the wound in the older brother. v. The father pleads: parakalei – to call or summon to ones side. To encourage, strengthen, admonish. Just as the father searched for the younger son, He searches now for the elder son. 1. IF the Father can not get the older son to find love then the brothers will never be brought together!

The older son now doubts his Father, that his father would act so strangely toward this prodigal. This heart not only loses his father but his brother too! He questions his father, quarrels with his father and in this we see ourselves. That in the midst of all the church going, and Bible reading we too question the Father, quarrel with the father and then feed upon the food of swine.

Loving The Lost
1. Both of his sons were lost

i. The prodigal went to a far country because that is where his heart was. ii. The Elder brother’s heart was in the ‘far country’ and not with the Father. iii. The actions of both revealed the condition of their hearts 1. One went out to raise hell 2. The other stayed home to live it.

The Father loves them both

i. He recognizes his son (Prodigal) and accepts him. This is the heart of the Gospel! If God sacrificed his son for me He will not forget me. ii. Despite the actions of the older son, accepts him and reminds him of who he is and what he has. If He died to save me how much more will he do to keep me.

He pays no attention to what has been lost, He thinks only about what I am.
The conclusion to this story: When the Father accepts a man as his child we should accept him as a brother.

i. *His heart is not in tune with the Father’s because his heart is at odds with the Father’s. The Christian whose heart is not inflamed with the glowing love of Jesus for the lost, is alienating himself from God in a very subtle but dreadful way. Now we see the wound in the older brother. Conclusion:

The Older brother has lost his love.
He is quick to judge
He disassociates himself from his brother, his blood line (all humanity)
Only the Father’s love can bring them all back together again! This is the heart of the Gospel: We are all in rags, our hearts have all been to the far country, we all selfishly squander our lives until we come home to the heart of the Father!
