The Presence, Anointing, and Glory - Part 3
080608 The Presence Anointing and Glory Pt3
Tim Franklin
Lk 9:27-ff
Introduction:
· So far in this series we have looked at the Presence and the Anointing.
· Today I want to take us into the Glory.
· There is a progression-The Presence, The Anointing, The Glory
· Our outline is:
o The Presence—God is Here
o The Anointing—God Has Something in His Hands
o The Glory—Oh God, We May All Die
· I sense momentum building among us for the things of God.
· I sense a fresh hunger for more of him.
· I want to present to you today that there is always more when you are following God.
- Ex 20:18-21 Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die." And Moses said to the people, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin." NKJV
1. The Presence—God is here!
a. What is the presence?
i. Hebrew word for presence is panim.
1. p¹nîm. Face. This particular word always occurs in the plural, perhaps indicative of the fact that the face is a combination of a number of features. The face identifies the person and reflects the attitude and sentiments of the person.
2. It is only natural that the face was considered to be extraordinarily revealing vis-a-vis a man's emotions, moods, and dispositions. (from Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament. Copyright © 1980 by The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. All rights reserved. Used by permission.)
3. We should read the word expecting to see and to feel the emotions of God. The emotions of God bring/reveal the intimacy of God to us.
ii. In the tabernacle and temple. The inner court held the ‘showbread’ also called the Bread of Presence.
1. It was a continual reminder to the worshippers of the truth that man does not live by bread alone, emphasized by the fact that these most holy offerings were afterward eaten.
2. It was the Old Testament version of the prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread"; and in the fact that the holy table was never for a moment left without some loaves lying on it, we have the symbol of man's continued and unbroken dependence upon God.(International Standard Bible Encyclopedia.)
b. Men Hide from the Presence
i. Gen 3:8And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. NKJV
ii. Gen 4:16Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. NKJV
c. Men Pursue the Presence
i. 5:24And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. NKJV
ii. ENOCH The expression "walked with God" denotes a devout life, lived in close communion with God, while the reference to his end has always been understood, as by the writer of He, to mean, "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God translated him" (Heb 11:5).(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright © 1996, 2003, 2006 by Biblesoft, Inc. iii. Seek first the Kingdom of God… Mt. 6:33, Mt. 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst.
d. God wants us to have His Presence
i. OT
1. Isa 63:9 In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the Angel of His Presence saved them; NKJV
2. Ex 33:14And He said, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." NKJV
3. Deut 4:37-38 and He brought you out of Egypt with His Presence, with His mighty power, NKJV
ii. Jesus-Emanuel God with us. Christ, the Bread of Heaven, continual presence.
1. Communion-Bread of Presence. Famines came because of sin. Sin separates from God and removes us from His Presence.
iii. Holy Spirit – I will not leave you as orphans I will give the Comforter.
iv. God wants us to experience His presence.
a. How do I get in the presence
a. Worship-God inhabits the praises of his people.Ps 22:3Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. New Living Translation
b. Faith-Heb 12:6 They that come must know that He is and that He is a rewarder
c. Acknowledge him- Practice the Presence. Good morning Holy Spirit.
2. The Anointing –God has something in His hands!
a. What is the anointing?
i. To anoint
1. Comes from the Gr. Word ‘Chrio’ meaning to smear, rub, anoint. ‘Christos’—Christ is the anointed one, the One smeared with authority,
a. Ps. 23:5 you anoint my head with oil.
b. Ps. 89:20 With my Holy Oil I have anointed Him.
c. Ps. 92:10 You have anointed my horn.
2. The anointing is the power.
a. Isa 10:27 And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil. NKJV
b. Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon and he has sent me to…heal, deliver, save, refresh, restore.
c. Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. NKJV
3. Soaking/spending time in the Presence, is getting anointing from being in the Presence.
b. What is the difference between the Presence of God and the Anointing of God?
i. The Presence is simply what I stated in the outline. God is here
1. The presence is the multifaceted way that God shows up to meet us where we are.
2. The presence is God with us. It is God inhabiting our praises. Ps. 22:3
ii. The anointing is when God shows up in the presence and He has something in His hands to give us.
1. Our definition, ‘Chrio’—to smear, rub, anoint. If I get ‘Chrio’, what touches me? The Hand of the one who anoints or rubs.
2. The anointing is associated with the hand. Watch this. The hand is common to all these.
a. Moses instructed to anoint Aaron and sons. Ex 28:41You shall anoint them, consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister to Me as priests. NKJV Moses anoints Aaron and sons. Ex 29:7 And you shall take the anointing oil, pour it on his head, and anoint him. NKJV
b. Moses anoints the tabernacle. Ex 30:26 With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; NKJV
c. Samuel anointed Saul. 1 Sam 15:1. Samuel also said to Saul,"The LORD sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel.
d. Samuel anointed David. 1 Sam 16:12-13 And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!" 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. NKJV
e. Elijah anoints Kings and prophets. 1 Kings 19:15-16 Then the LORD said to him: "Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. NKJV
f. We are to anoint ourselves. Matt 6:17-18 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, NKJV
g. Hand of God on Ezra. Ezra 7:6 The king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him. NKJV Ezra 7:9 according to the good hand of his God upon him NKJV Ezra 7:28 I was encouraged, as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me; and I gathered leading men of Israel to go up with me. NKJV Ezra 8:18 Then, by the good hand of our God upon us, they brought us a man of understanding, NKJV
h. I find the hand when I seek the face! To many people want the hand of God w/out the face of God.
3. The Power is what is in His hand.
a. Power as in authority. It is far different than the presence.
i. Luke 10:19 We have been given power over the enemy. NKJV
ii. I Jn 2:20, 27 You have this anointing in you.
b. Power as in dunamis/dynomite.
i. Luke 5:17 And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. NKJV
ii. Matt 10:1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. NKJV
iii. 1 Jn 3:8 For this reason was the Son of God made manifest that He might destroy the devils work. NKJV
c. We receive anointing through the laying on of hands
i. Impartation
1. 1 Tim 4:14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. NKJV
2. Acts 13:2-3 the Holy Spirit said,"Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." 3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. NKJV
c. You must put a demand on the anointing. How do we do this?
i. Faith-expressing itself through love, and expressing itself through hunger for the presence.
1. ps 63:1 my flesh longs for you, my soul thirsts for you. NKJV
2. Isa 26:9 my spirit within me I will seek You early NKJV
ii. Giving—Do not think for a moment that I am telling you that you can buy the anointing and don’t let any preacher deceive you into thinking otherwise. Acts 8:20 But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! NKJV
1. Jesus was willing to lose His life for us.
a. Fasting-led into wilderness by the Spirit came out empowered in the Spirit. Lk.
b. Love not his life even unto death.
c.
2. Paul 2 Cor 12:15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved. NKJV
3. 2 Kings 4:8 A notable woman builds a room for Elisha.
a. Room, bed, lamp, table and chair. Cost money. They spent resource to get the anointing in their house.
b. Getting the anointing will cost you. The anointing is free but it costs everything you have. Obedience!!!
iii. The anointing is the power that comes after having spent time in the presence of God, being conformed to His image and letting God ‘rub off’ on you. You have a measure of God to now give away. Acts 4:13-15Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. NKJV
d. The Presence brings the Power. It is not the other way around.
e. See- Wednesday night notes from two weeks ago. Why we need fresh oil.
3. The Glory—Oh God! We may all die!
a. What is it?
i. I am least qualified to speak here. For I know little about the glory of God. I can make assumptions and tell you of experiences from my walk with God, but the more I have studied the glory of God the little I know about it. I can safely say this: I believe the glory of God to be His manifest presence. When God makes himself visible to his people. When the man on the street can see God, they stand in awe of God for they have seen the glory.
ii. Hebrew – kabad-heavy weighty. Heavy with honor ie. Such as President Bush carries more weight than the average person on the street because of his authority. The Hebrew also means splendor dignity reputation. These are key to understanding the glory of God.
1. Ex 40:34-35Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. NKJV
iii. Greek-doxa—honor, glory, splendor, divine radiance
b. What are the characteristics of the glory? Let me give you some scriptures.
i. Ex 24:17-18 The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. NKJV The glory can be seen.
1. Jn 1:1 We have seen his glory, the glory of the Son of God.
2. Jn 2:11 Jesus when He did his first miracle at the wedding in Galilee was said to have manifested his glory. So when Todd Bentley allows a testimony to be shared and says, “That’s the glory of God he is correct.” It defies nature.
3. John 11:4 When Jesus heard that, He said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it." NKJV
ii. Ex 29:43-44 And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by My glory. NKJV Like divine micro waves that kill every unholy thing. Sanctified—Hebrew word is ‘qadosh’-holy, separated, set apart, consecrated.
iii. Ex 33:18And he said, "Please, show me Your glory." NKJV
1. Moses knew the presence, he knew the anointing, he was standing in the glory yet he said, “show me your glory!” How much deeper in God can you get than that?
2. Note: people trembled at the base of the mountain, Joshua went half way up the mountain, and Moses could stand in the glory. In Solomon’s temple the priests could not stand to minister yet Moses could stand. The glory affects people differently. The closer you get to God the more you can take.
iv. Acts 22:11 And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus. NKJV Paul saw intense light and was blinded.
v. Rev 15:8 The temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed. NKJV
1. Smoke – kapnou- means vapor, mist, like one would see their breath in the winter.
2. It came from the glory.
3. Shekinah glory-is a term preachers use all the time but it is not found in the Bible.
a. It comes from the Hebrew word-shakan-which means ‘to dwell’.
b. And from mishkan—tabernacle.
c. Together the word came to mean the visible presence of God. IE pillar of fire or cloud.
d. Found in the targums (an Aramaic translation of the Hebrew Bible.)
vi. Rev 18:1-2After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory. NKJV No need of sun! The glory has to do with light.
1. Light makes darkness retreat/disappear.
2. Light destroys the darkness of sickness, poverty, oppression etc.
vii. Matt 24:30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. NKJV
viii. Rev 21:23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it,* for the glory* of God illuminated it. NKJV
- What does the Glory produce in us?
i. One of the first things the glory produces is awe!
1. The awe of God. What does it mean to stand in awe of God?
a. to be astonished
i. Mt 12:23 the people were amazed. Deaf, dumb demon possessed man speaks.
ii. Mk 2:12 the people were amazed a paralytic walked.
iii. Mark 6:51-52 And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. NKJV Jesus walks on water.
b. Fear mingled with admiration or reverence; reverential fear; dread inspired by something great or terrific.
i. Stand in awe and sin not.
ii. Mt 14:26 Jesus walks on the water and they cry out in fear.
iii. Matt 28:3-4 His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. NKJV
c. To strike with fear and reverence; to influence by fear, terror or respect; as, his majesty awed them into silence.
i. Luke 5:26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen strange things today!" NKJV
ii. It produces the fear of the Lord. Hence, “Oh God, we may all die!”
1. Ex 20:18-21 Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die." And Moses said to the people, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin." NKJV
2. Luke 8:37 Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gadarenes* asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He got into the boat and returned. NKJV
3. Acts 2:43-44 then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. NKJV
4. Acts 5:5 then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. NKJV
iii. It produces transformation.
1. Transfiguration Lk. 9:27-36 note vs. 34=cloud and fear.
i. Luke 9:29And as He was praying, the appearance of His countenance became altered (different), and His raiment became dazzling white [oflashing with the brilliance of lightning]. AMP
ii. Altered-changed, to become something new.
iii. The glory alters things. We go from height to height and glory to glory. It is progressive.
iv. Jesus in the resurrection received a glorified body. When we are resurrected we will receive a glorified body.
v. Things happen in the glory without us asking!
b. Natural things get altered in the glory. Ie. Like water turning to wine.
iv. It produces worship of the most extravagant kind! Again. Luke 9. Peter wanted to build three houses of worship!
1. The more you are filled with the awe of God the more emotionally packed your worship will be.
2. The more you are filled with the awe of God the more expressive your worship will be.
3. The more you are filled with the awe of God the more excellent your worship will be.
4. The more you are filled with the awe of God and releasing the last three the more extravagant your worship will be!
5. Ps 5:7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. NKJV
6. Ps 29:2 Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. NKJV
7. Ps 96:9Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth. NKJV
- What am I to do with the Presence, the Anointing and the Glory?
i. Simply believe.
ii. John 11:40-41Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?" NKJV
Conclusion:
· John 11:40-41Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?" NKJV
· We have looked at three realms today that we can enter.
o The presence
o The anointing
o The glory
· The simple tells me that right when we think it is great! There is more!
· The first step is to let the King of Glory come in.
